How to Use Aromatherapy for Maximum Benefits

Aromatherapy is believed to help improve mood, so as to improve physical and mental health. Besides burning, there are various ways to use aromatherapy to get the maximum benefit. Aromatherapy is widely used as adjunctive therapy and alternative therapy. Aromatherapy that can be done at home or obtained at a beauty center, such as a spa, may also help individuals feel more comfortable in general. However, experts still have not been able to prove that aromatherapy can prevent or treat disease.

How Aromatherapy Works

Aromatherapy works by stimulating the nerves of the nose and brain. When we breathe in essential oil vapor, the aroma will enter the nasal cavity and then stimulate the nervous system in the brain that plays a role in regulating emotions. The aroma of essential oils will stimulate the hypothalamus area in the brain to produce the hormone serotonin which can improve mood. Not only that, aromatherapy is also able to stimulate the nervous system that regulates heart rate, blood pressure, response to stress, and breathing. If used by applying it, molecules of essential oils can have certain effects, such as anti-itch on the skin or pain relief in the joints. But sometimes, the effects are negative, for example irritation or inflammation.

Benefits of Aromatherapy

Numerous studies show that aromatherapy has several health benefits, including:
  • Relaxing the body and mind.
  • Improve sleep quality and help relieve insomnia.
  • Relieve pain, such as menstrual pain, pain due to kidney stones, or pain in osteoarthritis.

Various Ways to Use Aromatherapy

To get the benefits, there are several ways to use aromatherapy to choose from, namely:
  • Inhale aromatherapy vapors

  • Inhaling aromatherapy vapors, especially eucalyptus oil, is believed to relieve the symptoms of colds and nasal congestion.
